The Resume

    (February 9, 1896-December 30, 1982)
    Born in Arequipa, Peru
Birth name was Joaquin Alberto Vargas
Created the 'Varga girl' for Esquire magazine in the 1940s
Worked for Playboy in the 60s
Known for his pin-ups and nudes

Why he might be annoying:

He painted for the Ziegfeld Follies while dating Anna Mae Clift, a showgirl with the rival Greenwhich Village Follies.
He spent money as fast as he made it.
He had to borrow money for the wedding license when he and Clift eloped.
He lost a battle with Esquire over rights to the phrase 'Varga girl.'

Why he might not be annoying:

During World War II he frequently accommodated special requests from GIs for pin-ups.
Esquire convinced him to drop the 's' from his last name, then trademarked 'Varga' without telling him.
He came out of retirement to paint album covers for The Cars and Bernadette Peters.
His mastery of the airbrush is reflected in Airbrush Action Magazine's annual Vargas Award.
