While training for the American national squad in 1992, he was dismissed from training camp for elbowing a teammate in the face, breaking his nose.
While playing in the prestigious German Bundesliga, he allegedly bedded Miss Germany just a few months into his marriage to another woman (1996).
In 2007, he feuded with Jim Rome, inviting him to 'suck my dick' and threatening to 'club his ass.'
ESPN fired him over the outburst.

He was the first American to play in top-tier European soccer clubs.
He publicly apologized to Jim Rome.
His wife had an affair with teammate John Harkes, ending their marriage.
He was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2004.
During the 2010 World Cup, he called for an investigation of the referee who disallowed a game-winning goal for the American soccer squad.
