The Resume

    (May 3, 1891-February 28, 1963)
    Born in Culpeper, Virginia
Pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies (1912-17,1919-20) and Cincinnati Reds (1921-33)
    266-251 win-loss record
    3.15 career ERA
    1,350 strikeouts
Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee (1963)

Why he might be annoying:

He said his name sounded 'like a cross between a Greek letter fraternity and a college yell.'
He led the National League twice in losses (1917,1920).
After losses he would trash the locker room, with one teammate noting, 'The place would look like a tornado had gone through it.'
He became the first player to die between his election to the Hall of Fame and the induction ceremony.

Why he might not be annoying:

In college, in addition to being the ace of the pitching staff, he also lettered in basketball.
He went straight from the University of Virginia to the Phillies without spending any time in the minor leagues.
One of the few college educated players of his day, he also wrote poems and taught high school Latin during the off season.
He served in the Army's chemical warfare division during World War I.
After Warren Spahn broke his record for most wins by a left-handed pitcher (1959), he said he was glad, because it reminded people that he had set the record.
