    Recorded 'I Got a Mind to Ramble,' 'You Got to Reap Just What You Sow,' 'I Got Myself a Working Man,' '(My Man Is Such A) Handy Man,' 'Now I Am Satisfied,' 'Amtrak Blues' and 'Downhearted Blues'
    Gave up singing to be a nurse (1954-77)
    She ran away from home as a teenager to go to Chicago to be a singer.
    She started singing in bordellos.
    She lied about having a high school diploma when she entered nursing school.
    She also knocked two decades off her age.
    She initially rejected an offer from President Carter to perform at the White House because 'they wanted me there on my day off.'
    She sang opposite Paul Robeson in the first London production of 'Show Boat' (1928).
    She led USO troupes during World War II and the Korean War.
    After being forced to retire from nursing, she successfully resumed her singing career at age 82.
