He was named after the logo of the socialist movement.
He called himself a doctor even though he rarely practiced the profession.
He performed an illegal abortion on a woman, who then died of complications. He was caught and his dad went to jail for him (1919).
His dad founded the American Communist Party.
He made many business deals with the Soviet Union, then the ultimate enemy of the United States.
He contributed $54,000 illegally to Nixon's re-election campaign, which was then used for the Watergate break-in.
He was given one year probation and a $3,000 fine (1975).
He was protected politically by the Gore family.
He tried to buy out the makers of 'Arm and Hammer' baking soda.
He infamously bought Leonardo da Vinci's 'Codex Leicester' and renamed it the 'Codex Hammer' for no apparent reason (1980).
He was given a pardon by George H.W. Bush for contributing $100,000 to the RNC (1989).

Why he might not be annoying:

He argued for peace between the Soviet Union and the United States.
He is probably the only person in the 20th century who was friends with both Vladamir Lenin and Ronald Reagan.
Marlon Brando portrayed a character based off of him in the otherwise terrible 'The Formula' (1980).
He died of bone marrow cancer (1990).
