    Born in Vimiero, Portugal
    Prime Minister of Portugal (1932-68)
    Also served as Finance Minister (1928-40) and Minister for War (1936-44)
    He established a right-wing dictatorship.
    During the Spanish Civil War, he let weapons from Germany and Italy be sent to Franco’s Fascists through Portugal.
    He had his portrait hung alongside the cross in Portuguese elementary schools.
    He tried to hold onto Portugal’s African and Asian colonies during the Cold War, resulting in Portugal being ostracized by other nations.
    He forced General Manuel Vassalo e Silva into exile for refusing to adopt a scorched earth campaign when India conquered the Portuguese city of Goa (1961).
    In a 2007 poll, he was named worst Portuguese person of all time.
    He was popular early in his reign for bringing political and economic stability to the country.
    Although officially neutral during World War II, he allowed Britain to operate a naval base on Portuguese territory in the Azores.
    When he suffered a stroke and could no longer perform as Prime Minister (1968), allegedly no one in the government was willing to tell him he had been replaced.
    In a different 2007 poll, he was named the greatest Portuguese person of all time.
