The Resume

    (May 2, 1660-October 24, 1725)
    Known for his operas
Wrote ‘Pompeo (1683),’ ‘Teodora (1697),’ ‘Telemaco (1718)’ and ‘Griselda (1721)’
    Father of Domenico Scarlatti

Why he might be annoying:

He got a high-paying job because his sister was sleeping with the viceroy of Naples (nepotism).
He exploited his talented son, Domenico.
When Domenico said he wanted to make his living on his own, he stopped speaking to him.
His operas are rarely performed today.

Why he might not be annoying:

After he established himself as an opera composer, the Pope banned opera in Rome, which hurt his career.
He influenced Handel, Bach, Mozart and many other composers.
One critic said he ‘practically created the language of classical music.’
Music satirist Peter Schickele did a comedy bit about how much Scarlatti would have weighed on Jupiter.
