    Appeared on Broadway in ‘The Jest’ (1919-20), ‘The Broken Wing (1920-21), ‘The Hairy Ape’ (1922), and ‘What Price Glory?’ (1925)

Why he might be annoying:

    While in Mexico working as a mining engineer, he was jailed overnight after getting into a fight with a Mexican soldier (1911).
    Adolphe Menjou said he had ‘a face that looked as though it had been run over by a truck.’
    Because of his broken nose, he was typecast as villains and thugs.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He earned an engineering degree from Cornell and tutored mathematics there for six years.
    He was fluent in French, Spanish, German, and Yiddish.
    He took up acting after Lionel Barrymore told him, ‘With that face, you could make a fortune in the theater.’
    He considered getting a nose job to expand the types of roles he was offered, but United Artists took out an injunction to stop him.
