He was an assistant to Gene Keady for 18 years before he could get a head coaching job.
He tends to only focus on strong perimeter shooting and nothing else.
He sometimes uses mafia lingo when talking to his players.
He called Duke guard J.J. Redick a 'fucking nerd' to his face and refused to shake his hand after Illinois lost to Duke in the Sweet 16 (March 26, 2004).

Why he might not be annoying:

He transformed Southern Illinois from nothing to one of the strongest mid-majors in college basketball by sending them to the Sweet 16 (2002).
He coached Illinois to their first outright Big Ten Title since 1952.
