Wrote books 'Fire in the Flint (1924),' 'Flight (1926),' 'Rope and Faggot (1929),' 'Rising Wind (1945),' 'A Man Called White (1948)' and 'How Far the Promised Land (1955)'

Why he might be annoying:

His middle name was Francis.
He was divorced.
He was only 1/64th African-American, but racist US laws deemed him black.
Many black friends shunned him after his marriage to white South African-born socialite Poppy Cannon.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was definitely not ashamed of his heritage.
He was passionate in his quest for civil rights for African-Americans.
As a child, he witnessed whites murdering blacks during race riots in Atlanta.
His 'white' appearance allowed him to bear witness acts of racism and discriminations.
Many of his writings and essays helped to launch the civil rights movement.
His book 'Rising Wind' was instrumental in ending segregation in the US Armed Forces.
His son died in a mountain-climbing accident in Austria.
