TV Series
It visibly went down in quality when Don Knotts left the show to go star in movies.
It tried to replace Barney Fife with Warren Ferguson, but the new character was not popular and only appeared in eleven episodes, with no explanation of why he stopped appearing.
Most of the characters in the town could be described as hicks or bumpkins.
It was colorized halfway into the series (1965).
It spawned a spin-off involving Jim Nabors called 'Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.'
The last season was a set up for another failed spin-off, 'Mayberry R.F.D' starring Ken Berry.
The premise of 'Mayberry RFD's pilot was the same as the Andy Griffith show's pilot, that of Aunt Bee staying as a nanny to a single dad's son, over the objections of the boy.
It took place in the south during the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement, yet none of that seemed to effect Mayberry at all.
For no apparent reason, Aunt Bee spoke in a proper British accent while everyone else spoke in a southern drawl.
It lead to TV's first spin off show: 'Gomer Pyle, USMC.'
Its child star Ron Howard, went on to become a highly successful director.
It was so accurate in depicting small town life that people actually believed Mayberry, existed.
Andy Griffith and Don Knotts complimented each other very well.
It allowed people to escape from the times and just be entertained without referencing the changes in America.
It has a timeless appeal and for that reason is very popular in syndication.
It was very popular with older adults and remains so to this day.
It is one of the few shows to end while still at the top of the Nielsen's ratings.
It ranked #9 in TV Guide's List of the '50 Greatest Shows of All Time' (2002).
