    She was an American who found more success in Europe.
    Her 1927 song with Duke Ellington, 'Creole Love Call,' caused a stir due to its overt sexuality.

    Her father and younger sister died one after the other when she was in her teens.
    The home she purchased in the white community of Larchmont, New York was set ablaze.
    After that incident, she and her family fled to England, where she became the first black artist to sign with the BBC.
    Her final stage appearance was at Carnegie Hall in 1992, when she was 91.
