    His cabinet featured several headstrong personalities (including future Prime Ministers Lord RussellLord Palmerston, and William Gladstone) who he had trouble keeping under control.
    His indecision as the Crimean War approached undermined the peacekeeping efforts of his Foreign Secretary, the Earl of Clarendon.
    He resigned after Parliament voted to establish a select committee to investigate the conduct of the Crimean War.

    After he was orphaned at age eleven, one of his guardians was William Pitt the Younger.
    As a diplomat in Vienna (1813), he played a key role in organizing and financing the Sixth Coalition that defeated Napoleon.
    As Foreign Minister, he negotiated settlements of the outstanding border disputes between the US and Canada.
    He was a distinguished scholar of classical Greece and headed the Society of Antiquities (1812-46).
