Why he might be annoying:

His troubled childhood, like many of his books characters, stems from having a violent, mentally ill alcoholic father and a mother that was often sick.
He had non supportive parents that felt that books and reading were a waste of time and money, discouraging him from reading.
He sold original short fiction stories to friends and family at eight years old.
His wife, Gerda, offered to support him for five years to help him kick start his career in writing.
His wife told him if he couldn't make it as a writer within those five years, that he never would.
Many of his novels are, essentially, the same story over and over again: a homicidal maniac chasing some potential victim. Half the story is told from the maniac's point-of-view and the other half is told from the potential victim's point-of-view.
He has had a lot of obstacles to overcome.
His first day on the job at Appalachian Poverty Program, he learned the previous counselor had been beaten up and hospitalized the day before by the kids he was helping.
He has had hippie hair do's.

Why he might not be annoying:

His books and novels have been published in thirty eight languages.
Eight of his writings are #1 New York Times bestsellers, making him one of only a dozen writers ever to have achieved that milestone.
He used writing to escape an undesirable homelife and did not follow in his parents footsteps.
His writings have been described by New York Times as 'psychologically complex, masterly and satisfying.'
    He has a supportive spouse.
His books have been major bestsellers in countries as diverse as Japan and Sweden.
He graduated from Shippensburg State College where he won a fiction writing competition (Atlantic Monthly).
He was an English teacher and a youth counselor for underprivileged kids at Appalachian Poverty Program.
He and his wife adopted their golden retriever, Trixie, when a leg injury relieved her of her duties of aiding wheel-chair bound people.
He ranked #53 (2000) and #61 (2001) in Forbes Power List.
