He strongly supported the implementation of 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' which prohibited openly gay soldiers from serving in the military.
Speaking at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, he labeled himself as a 'new Democrat.'
By sending American troops into countries like Rwanda and Bosnia, he upset those who argue for non-interventionism.
He enjoyed learning English by watching John Wayne movies.
His nickname was 'Shali.'
