Carved about 100 saints and apostles for the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine (1901)
Head of carving for the early stages of the Stone Mountain confederate monument in Georgia (1923-1924)
Why he might be annoying
He was divorced.
While working on the Stone Mountain monument, he developed connections with the Ku Klux Klan.
He destroyed all of his plaster models of Stone Mountain in a fit of rage and left the project.
He was arrogant and a perfectionist.
Why he might not be annoying
He dreamed that everyone would be able to visit Mount Rushmore for free (which is no longer a reality).
It was his artistic vision and determination that kept the project going.
He died just a few months before Rushmore was completely finished, leaving his son to complete the final phase of the project.
Mount Rushmore is one of the most recognizable symbols of the United States.
