    (July 5, 1962-November 9, 2008)
Born in Tenggulun, East Java, Indonesia
Member of the terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah
One of the perpetrators of the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people and injured 209 more
    Brother of Ali ‘Mukhlas’ Ghufron
Found guilty of the bombings and sentenced to death (August 7, 2003)
Executed by firing squad at the island prison of Nusa Kambangan
He stole items from his own home and sold them during his childhood.
He attended Al-Mukmin Islamic boarding school, which is founded by Abu Bakar Ba’asyir and trains terrorists.
He had little interest in school, and only made it to the second year of high school before his expulsion.
His first marriage lasted only for two years.
He attempted high school for the second time only to drop out.
He desecrated Javanese graves in order to appease his father, but the exact opposite happened when he desecrated a village elder’s grave, which horrified his parents and brought him into police custody for a week.
According to the police, he had an immature personality and lower than normal intellectual capacity.
He ‘remarried’ his first wife while still married to his current one.
He smiled and gave two thumbs up when he was sentenced to death, hence his nicknames ‘The Smiling Assassin’, ‘The Smiling Bomber’, and ‘The Laughing Bomber’, further outraging his victims’ families.
He showed no remorse over his actions.
His father was involved in the Indonesian struggle for independence from the Dutch.
He was described as ‘simple’ and ‘shallow’.
In fact, it was Mukhlas who brainwashed him into a militant.
Most of the victims of the bombings were Australians even though the intended targets were Americans.
His ‘remarriage’ to his first wife was performed in his absence because he was in jail.
He remained calm and confident throughout his trial.
At least his humor and actions made a boring-looking trial look interesting.
