The Resume

    (June 21, 1905-April 15, 1980)
    Full name was Jean-Paul-Charles-Aymard Sartre

Wrote the plays 'No Exit,' 'The Flies'

Why he might be annoying:

Few people know how to pronounce his name. Is it pronounced 'Sart' or 'Sartra?' It is actually pronunced Sartr.
    He smoked...a lot.
As a child, he was caught committing plagiarism.
He turned down the Noble Prize for Literature in 1964 as a protest of bourgeois society.
    He was a dedicated Marxist.
He thought that life was 'absurd and meaningless.'
Although he probably wasn't the most talented existentialist philosopher, he became the most famous one.
'Nausea' was about some guy who freaked out over the fact that things exist, felt a lot of angst, and threw up quite a bit. The End.
He would not criticize the Soviet Union until after Stalin died.
Although he supported Algerian independence, the O.A.S., an Algerian terrorist group, bombed his apartment twice within a year.
Simone de Beauvoir said that he was more of a fiction writer than a philosopher.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was often parodied by Monty Python.
Albert Schweitzer was his great uncle.
He went to school with Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Claude Levi-Strauss.
In 1929, he met Simone de Beauvoir, and they became life long friends and lovers.
He and Simone de Beauvoir saw no need to marry and had two rules for their relationship: They were both allowed to fall in love with or have sex with anyone else they wanted, and they were always completely honest, never withholding anything from the other.
He fought in World War II and was captured.
While in Stalag XII, he wrote and directed a play with fellow inmates, and wrote a great deal of philosophy.
He was released in 1941 and joined the French resistance movement.
He went blind before he died.
