Religious Figure
    (April 22, 1947- )
    Irishman who resides in London
Ran onto the British Grand Prix
Attacked Brazilian runner Vanderlei de Lima during the Olympic marathon (August 29, 2004)
    Given a one-year suspended sentence
He grabbed the leader of a marathon and bundled him toward spectators before police could get him off.
He disrupted de Lima's rhythm during the race and de Lima dropped from first to third place.
He told the police the reason of the attack was to 'prepare for the second coming' (sure, like pushing marathon runners off the track will accomplish that).
He wore a kilt, green beret, and knee-high socks during the incident.
He also disrupted the British Grand Prix by running onto the track with the cars forced to swerve around him (he was given two months of jail time for that).
He tried to disrupt cricket and rugby matches.
Because of his Olympic action, the Brazilians took the Canadian/South Korean tradition of asking for a duplicate gold for de Lima (they were turned down).
He was defrocked by the Catholic Church for his radical views (1995).
He claims these actions have something to do with the second coming of Christ.
He capitalized by inflicting himself into the achievements of someone else.
His action created a memorable Olympic moment.
Fortunately, his act was the worst that happened in an Olympics where some feared terrorist attacks.
His action indirectly led to de Lima getting the Pierre de Coubertin medal for sportsmanship.
A publisher of his books, Leslie Broad, says of him, 'He comes across as a shy, very intelligent and compassionate man but as is often the way with people who are very intelligent, it sometimes manifests itself in very strange ways.'
