Why he might be annoying:

He was named after a Methodist minister who adopted his mother.
He was a nerdy teen who collected stamps and raised homing pigeons.
After he lost his right arm in World War II, he had to abandon his dream of becoming a surgeon and instead became a lawyer.
After his first wife died of colon cancer, he became engaged in 2008 to a woman more than 23 years his junior.

Why he might not be annoying:

He had some medical training, and at age 17, was pressed into service to help civilian casualties during the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
As soon as the ban of Japanese-Americans serving in the U.S. Army was lifted in 1943, he enlisted.
A fierce battle against the Germans in Italy cost him his arm as well as bullet wounds in his belly and leg.
Obtaining the rank of captain, he received a Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and 12 other medals.
He spent 20 months in Army hospitals where he met and befriended Bob Dole - polar opposites on the political front yet the best of pals.
He has taken an active interest in Native American causes.
He was married to the same woman for 57 years until her 2006 death.
Six of the eight times he's been elected to the Senate, his winning margin was higher than 70%.
He became Hawaii's first representative after its 1959 statehood, the first Japanese-American to serve in the House and Senate and as of 2008, the third longest serving senator.
