Why he might be annoying:

Some sources say he was born as Cornelius Richard Van Mattimore in 1900 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
He was discovered while working as a messenger when he crashed his motorcycle outside the Paramount Studios gate, breaking his leg (1922).
Most of his career was spent in B-grade Westerns and action films.
He was married three times, divorced twice.

Why he might not be annoying:

During World War I, he was a pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force, an experience that helped land him his best-remembered role, in the Oscar-winning 'Wings.'
During World War II, he was a flight instructor for the US Army Air Force and an air safety expert for the government.
He almost had to retire from films when he started going deaf, but a 1949 operation restored his hearing.
