Why he might be annoying:

    During his first tour of Australia, he missed the first two games as he was suffering the lingering effects of severe seasickness (1907).
    He was criticized for continuing to play cricket at the start of World War I instead of joining the military. (He was drafted into the Royal Flying Corps as a mechanic at the end of the 1916 season.)
    He missed most of the 1922 season after an appendectomy.
    He turned down an offer to run for Parliament as a Liberal party candidate (1925).

Why he might not be annoying:

    His 61,760 runs and 199 centuries are records for first class cricket.
    At age 46, he was the oldest player to score a Test century (1929).
    Wisden credited him with having ‘set the standard for 20th century batsmanship.’
    He was one of only two players to be named Wisden’s Cricketer of the Year twice (1909,1926).
    He was married to Ada Ellen Gates for 56 years.
