    Wrote poems ‘The Wreck of the Deutschland,' ‘Spring,' ‘God's Grandeur,' ‘The Caged Skylark,' ‘As Kingfishers Catch Fire,' ‘Pied Beauty,' ‘Carrion Comfort' and ‘The Habit of Perfection'
    Converted to Catholicism in 1866 and was ordained in 1877
    As a college student he kept a meticulous record of his sins.
    He abandoned the Anglican faith to become a Catholic.
    He burned most of his early verse after deciding to become a priest.
    The strict routines of Jesuit life led to severe depression.
    His convoluted poetry can be difficult to read.
    He described Dublin as a ‘joyless place.'
    He wrote, ‘All my undertakings miscarry: I am like a straining eunuch.'
    A superior said of him ‘his mind runs in eccentric ways.'
    His conversion alienated him from his family for many years.
    A poem written to honor five nuns who died in a shipwreck was rejected by the Jesuit journal he submitted it to.
    His students at University College Dublin resented his English background.
    His innovative poetry, neglected in his lifetime, anticipated modern free verse.
    Ireland, where he once felt ostracized, now hosts the annual Hopkins Literary Festival.
    His final words were ‘I am so happy.'
