Why he might be annoying:

In 1966 he released his first single, 'The Elf/Turn Into Earth,' which went nowhere even though it featured guest guitarist Jimmy Page.
He wrote so many songs depicting historical events he was credited with his own music genre - historical folk rock.
He gave time constrained AM radio station fits as his two biggest hits were both close to seven minutes long.
Some thought he became lead singer for the Pet Shop Boys, but it was his soundalike Neil Tennant.

Why he might not be annoying:

His 1969 album 'Love Chronicles' is regarded as the first mainstream recording to employ the work 'fucking' (the title track was about his sexual escapades).
When he immigrated to the U.S. and settled in California in the mid '70s he found chart success.
Adapting to the California culture he took up wine collecting as a side hobby.
Both 'Year of the Cat' and 'Time Passages' hit Billboard's Top 10 singles chart and both albums containing the singles went platinum.
