Baseball Player
His major league playing career was short lived.
He was fired by the White Sox after he started the 1995 season with a 11-20 record.
In his first year in Pittsburgh as a manager, his Pirates team were known as 'The Freak Show' with rookies and low paid veterans and they came up short of winning the NL Central Division.
His managing productivity declined after the 1997 season.
He managed the Pirates to a loss in the final game of Three Rivers Stadium (October 1, 2000).
He was born on Christmas Day.
He hit a home run in his first career at bat.
He batted left handed most of the time despite being a switch hitter.
He managed a White Sox playoff contending team with players such as Frank Thomas, Robin Ventura and Jack McDowell.
This resulted in him becoming the third White Sox manager to win the AL Manager of the Year Award.
He has known Jim Leyland very well.
