He attended a snooty private school in North Carolina before the family moved to L.A. when he was in his teens.
He named Ralph Carter's character on 'Good Times' Michael Evans.
He was Lionel on 'The Jeffersons' for just the first season, then quit to concentrate on 'Good Times.'
After 'Good Times' was canceled in 1979, he came back to replace the actor who replaced him as Lionel, but the character was phased out over the course of several years.
After 'The Jeffersons' he all but disappeared from TV, making just one guest appearance on 'Walker, Texas Ranger' in 2000.
He was studying acting at L.A. City College when at age 21 he landed the plum 'All in the Family' role.
He fought constantly with Norman Lear and associates who wanted to tweak 'Good Times,' including writing the father out of the show.
He studied real estate, received his California real estate license in 1986 and became a moderately successful land investor.
He was invited to join in on the Sherman Hemsley TV Land special in April 2006, but ill health prevented his attendance.
His death wasn't publicly announced until a week after he died.
