Why they might be annoying:

They renamed themselves the Cardinals after being known as the Perfectos for one season.
Fred Saigh threatened to sell the team to someone who would move them out-of-town if somebody didn't step up and buy them from him (1952).
They helped keep the Red Sox fans in misery by beating Boston two times since The Curse kicked off (1946, 67).
They've been nicknamed 'El Birdos,' the 'Redbirds' and the 'Cards.'
In 1990, they finished last in their division for the first time since 1918.
Mark McGwire's home run chase in 1998 overshadowed the fact that the Cardinals finished in 3rd place in the NL Central Division.

Why they might not be annoying:

They were named the Cardinals after sportswriter Willie McHale heard a female fan say, 'What a lovely shade of cardinal,' which he used in his column. From there it became something that fans referred to the team as and ownership eventually changed their name.
Rogers Hornsby won the Triple Crown twice in a Cardinals jersey (1922, 25).
Rogers Hornsby's 1924 .424 batting average is the highest of all batting averages during the 1900's.
They beat the Yankees in a 7 game series in their first World Series appearance (1926).
Joe Medwick won the Triple Crown for the third time in Cardinals history in 1937.
After Fred Saigh made it clear that he wanted to sell the team, Anheuser-Busch, Inc., led by Augusta A. Busch, Jr. stepped in and bought the team.
Stan Musial and Bob Gibson spent their entire careers in St. Louis.
Jim Edmonds said that St. Louis is the best place to play baseball in.
They have a great feud against the Chicago Cubs.
Broadcaster Jack Buck and pitcher Darryl Kile both passed away in 2002.
They have some of the most loyal fans in all of baseball.
They're the second team to win ten World Series wins, while the Yankees have 26 (2006).
They're arguably the most storied National League franchise.
