    British soldier William Wemms was tried and acquitted for his murder
    Little is known about his life.
    He has been called a villainous ‘rabble rouser’ by some historians.
    John Adams said his ‘very looks was enough to terrify any person.’
    He and other protesters were throwing things at the British soldiers before they were fired upon by them.
    His death was used for propaganda purposes by Samuel Adams.
    Contrary to popular belief, he probably wasn’t the first of the protesters to be killed.
    He was born into slavery, the offspring of black and Indian parents.
    He managed to escape to freedom (1750).
    He protested the presence of British troops in Boston.
    During one of the protests, the British soldiers standing by fired into the crowd, killing him and four others (1770).
    He is traditionally listed as the first man to have died in the Revolutionary War.
    Black abolitionists declared May 5 to be ‘Crispus Attucks Day’ (1858).
