Like many socialists his background was thoroughly bourgeois.
He studied law and literature at university but never received a degree.
For awhile he supported Josef Stalin and championed the Cuban revolution.
In 1987, he argued the United States should try to coexist with the Soviet Union.
His father's support of Emiliano Zapata forced his family to flee Mexico for a time.
He published his first poems when still a teenager.
Unlike many of his peers, he eventually renounced Stalinism.
In 1968, he resigned as an ambassador to protest the killing of 200 student protestors by the Mexican army.
Peruvian writer Mario Vargas LLosa called him ‘One of the greatest poets that the Spanish language world has produced and, at the same time, a great humanist.'
