(1948),’ ‘Ruby Gentry (1952),’ ‘The Moon Is Blue (1953),’ ‘The Caine Mutiny (1954),’ ‘Love Me or Leave Me (1955),’ ‘The Carpetbaggers (1964),’ ‘Coogan’s Bluff (1968),’ and ‘Charley Varrick (1973)’

His Hollywood Walk of Fame star was misspelled.
He was one of the three actors to play Rob Petrie’s father on The Dick Van Dyke Show (in two episodes as Sam Petrie, although the character was named Edward in other episodes, making it even more confusing).

He was a sailor and reporter for the Denver Post before pursuing acting.
He was an in-demand actor on radio serials of the 1930’s and 40’s.
His career survived after Hollywood blacklisted him for nine months over his politics.
He received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for ‘The Caine Mutiny’ in 1955.
Later in life, he voiced children's books for an elementary school.
He contracted a filarial worm while entertaining troops in Vietnam with the USO.
His condition worsened after returning to the United States, and he was forced to undergo surgery to have part of his leg amputated to treat a resultant blood clot.
His death was attributed to complications from the surgery.
