    The two films that he is most remembered for, Hitchcock's 'Rope' and the noir 'Gun Crazy,' were flops when first released.
    He was described as 'cold and distant' on screen, which limited his career.
    He played the murder victim in two different 'Perry Mason' episodes.
    He was nominated for an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for his film debut in 'The Corn Is Green.'
    Early reviews compared him with Jimmy Stewart and Gary Cooper.
    He donated his body to medical science.
