He briefly taught French at a prep school, but admitted he was 'too intolerant and impatient' for the job.
He described being a newsreader as 'fascinating but limited.'
He decided he did not want to spend his life reading the news and transferred to the BBC's programming department (1961).
He hated it so much that he left to become a freelancer, finally returning to the BBC as a newsreader again in 1969.
He collected teddy bears.

He served with the Coldstream Guards during WWII and was wounded during the D-Day landings.
He was the first BBC newsreader to appear on screen (September 4, 1955).
He was known for his unflappability, even continuing without losing a beat when a false tooth fell out during a live news bulletin.

He was voted favorite newsreader by 'Daily Mirror' readers (1979).
