    Wrote ‘Coming of Age in Samoa (1928),' ‘Growing Up in New Guinea (1930),' ‘Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies (1935),' ‘Male and Female (1949),' ‘Continuities in Cultural Evolution (1964)' and ‘Blackberry Winter (1972)'
    All three of her marriages failed.
    When in college she was part of a clique known as the ‘Ash Can Cats.'
    Her books were seen by some as championing casual sex.
    The governor of Florida called her a ‘dirty old lady.'
    Despite her professional accomplishments she disliked the term ‘feminist.'
    Her research methods came under fire and her major findings questioned in the 1980's.
    She made anthropology a popular major for undergraduates.
    Her father told her, ‘It's a pity you aren't a boy; you'd have gone far.'
    She challenged the idea that gender differences are completely innate.
    She said, ‘Every time we liberate a woman, we liberate a man.'
    She supported the youth movement of the 1960's.
    When she died, Jimmy Carter said she ‘brought the humane insights of cultural anthropology to a public of millions.'
