The Resume

    (January 12, 1971-April 8, 1979)
    Originally aired on CBS
Set in a Queens, New York home of a working-class bigot and his family
    Carroll O'Connor as Archie Bunker
    Jean Stapleton as Edith Bunker
Rob Reiner as Michael 'Meathead' Stivic
    Sally Struthers as Gloria Bunker-Stivic
    Isabel Sanford as Louise Jefferson
    Sherman Hemsley as George Jefferson
Partially based on British TV series 'Till Death Us Do Part'

Why All in the Family might be annoying:

It made a joke out of bigotry.
It was the first show where a flushing toilet could be heard.
The original choice for the part of Archie Bunker was Mickey Rooney.
A lot of people turned down doing the show because of its offensive content.
It was originally intended to be shot in black and white, but CBS objected.
Rob Reiner was already losing a lot of his hair when the show debuted.
It just might hold the record for most spin-offs of a television series, with 'Maude (1972),' 'Good Times (1974),' 'The Jeffersons (1975),' 'Archie Bunker's Place (1979),' 'Checking In (1981)' and 'Gloria (1982).'
None of these spin-offs were seen as good as the original show they were derived from.
It was the first comedy series to be shot on videotape rather than film.
The series ended on a lame note, as everyone from the original cast had left except for Carroll O'Connor and it was basically like every other sitcom.
Sally Struthers tried to sue to get out of her contract.
They brought in a kid after Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers left the show, and it was never the same.
At one point, the producers planned on killing off Archie Bunker at a convention if Carroll O'Connor refused to accept his contract.

Why All in the Family might not be annoying:

It pointed out the absurdities in racism and bigotry.
When it premiered, it was like nothing that had ever been on television, and it did not avoid controversial issues like most comedies.
It was one of the first situation comedies to deal with harsh issues like racism, homosexuality, rape, feminism, breast cancer and impotence.
It helped CBS shed its image as a rural network, after it was selected to replace shows like 'The Red Skelton Show' and 'Green Acres.'
They were able to use guest stars effectively, notably in an episode where Sammy Davis Jr. appeared on the show, which secured an Emmy Award for Best Directing.
It was #1 in the Nielsen ratings for 5 straight years, a feat only matched by 'The Cosby Show.'
It was one of the first television series since the 1950s to be taped before a studio audience.
Archie and Edith's easy-chairs are on display at the Smithsonian Institute.
It predicted the 1980 presidential election, after a spiteful Archie Bunker shouted when Carter defeated Ford, 'You're gonna get Reagan in 1980, wise guy!'
Though a complete asshole, Archie Bunker ranked #24 in TV Guide's list of the '50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time' (June 20, 2004).
It ranked #4 in TV Guide's List of the '50 Greatest Shows of All Time' (2002).
