    Author of 'Bridge over the River Kwai' and 'Planet of the Apes'
    He was French.
    He never married, but according to his family and friends, had a lover in a mysterious woman who drifted in and out of his life and who's identity was only revealed to his family after his death. Her name has never been revealed to the public. Tres French.
    He got the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for 'The Bridge over the River Kwai' (which also won the Best Picture Oscar) because the actual screenwriters were on the Hollywood blacklist.
    Before WWII, he was an engineer on rubber plantations in southeast Asia. During the war, he spied on the Japanese for allied forces and was captured in 1943 by Vichy French. His experiences in a POW camp inspired 'The Bridge over the River Kwai.'
    'Planet of the Apes' and 'Bridge over the River Kwai' were not only hit novels and hit movies, but, are among the few novels that were improved by being filmed.
    He kept in touch with his fellow POWS after the war and helping those in need.
    He helped his widowed sister raise her daughter, including offereing to adopt her.
