Actress
    (March 7, 1873-February 1, 1959)
    Born in Louisville, Kentucky
    Birth name was Nellie Crawford
Died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California
Acted in 'Queen Kelly,' 'The Children Pay,' 'Maid of Salem' and 'Carmen'
Most of her roles went uncredited.
In 1915, she appeared in the racially-charged 'Birth of a Nation.'
She was wrongly thought to be Dorothy Dandridge's grandmother.
No-one dared asked the origin of her stage name.
Her husband abandoned her after the birth of their third child.
She chose to portray a maid on film rather than be a maid in real life.
Known as the 'Queen of Black Hollywood,' she threw lavish parties and wore extravagant fashions.
She was so well-respected, other black actors sought her counsel.
