Swimmer
    (January 6, 1939-April 15, 2012)
Born in Nairn, Scotland, United Kingdom
Birth name was Iain Murray Rose
Family moved to Australia during WWII
At the 1956 Summer Olympics won gold medals in 400 meter freestyle, 1500 meter freestyle and 4x200 meter freestyle relay
At the 1960 Summer Olympics won a gold medal in 400 meter freestyle, silver in 1500 meter freestyle and bronze in 4x200 meter freestyle relay
Appeared in the films 'Ride the Wild Surf' (1964) and 'Ice Station Zero' (1968)
There was a rumor that his swimming success was due to him having webbed feet. (He didn't.)
He was nicknamed 'the Seaweed Streak' for his vegan diet.
He was unable to stay at the Olympic Village because it could not cater to his diet. Instead, his mother prepared his meals.
He failed to compete at the 1964 Olympics after he missed the Australian time trials because he was in Hawaii filming 'Ride the Wild Surf.'
At 17, he was the youngest male athlete to win three gold medals at one Olympics.
He was a patron of the Australian charity the Rainbow Club which teaches disabled children how to swim.
Swimming Australia President David Urquhart said, 'Murray Rose is part of the swimming DNA in this country. His success inspired a generation.'
