Football Coach
    (December 23, 1936- )
    Born in Richmond, Virginia
Head coach for The Citadel (1973-77), University of Maryland Terrapins (1982-86), Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1987-91), San Diego Chargers (1992-96), Detroit Lions (1997-2000) and the Army Black Knights (2004-06)
He never played a game in the NFL.
After guiding the Chargers to their first Super Bowl, his teams failed to repeat the same degree of success.
His tenure in Detroit was considered a disappointment.
During his stint with the Lions, he referred to the team as a 'bunch of quitters who only play to collect a paycheck' following a dismal season.
He quit midway through the 2000 season, leading many football pundits to assume he quit in protest to the way Lions owner William Clay Ford was running the team.
He served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the 1960's.
He guided Georgia Tech to a national championship (1990).
His success at the college level garnered the interest of the San Diego Chargers.
During his stint with the Chargers, he guided the team to three playoff appearances, two divisional championships and a Super Bowl appearance.
He cleared up the rumors of quitting the Lions, citing he left due to medical reasons and not out of protest.
