    She only had a handful of top 40 hits, all during the early 1970s.
    She was offered a contract with Motown, but her mother (who was managing her career at the time) turned it down.
    She sang jazz for many years before turning to pop and soul.
    When songwriters Holland, Dozier and Holland left Motown, they signed her to their newly formed Invictus Label.
    She was a sex symbol during the 1970s.
    She continued both singing and acting on stage.
    In the early 1980s, she hosted a talk show.
    She recorded a comedy CD bashing Barney the Dinosaur.
