Why he might be annoying:

His works are often mistaken with those of H.G. Wells.
As a child, he once saw a boy crying because he was to be placed on a ship and sent away, so he offered to change places with that boy.
His father found out of his scheme and snatched young Jules before the ship sailed and punished him.
At that point, the adventurous Jules decided it was safer to only travel in his mind.
Although some of his contraptions are ridiculous, like sending people to the moon in a hallowed out cannon ball via a 900 foot cannon, he reasoned that its power would have the velocity to escape Earth's atmosphere.

Why he might not be annoying:

He made a deal in the 1860's to publish two books a year at a sum of $4,000 annually (he stuck to that agreement until he died forty years later).
At his death, he was fifteen books ahead of that agreement.
He took great pains to make his books scientifically reasonable, even if his contraptions were not reasonable.
