    (May 5, 1864-January 27, 1922)
    Born in Cochran's Mills, Pennsylvania
Birth name was Elizabeth Jane Cochran
Reporter for the Pittsburgh Dispatch (1880-87) and New York World (1887-94)
Wrote 'Ten Days in a Madhouse' (1887)
Inspired by Jules Verne's Phileas Fogg, circumnavigated the globe in 72 days (1889-90)
As a teenager, she added an 'e' to Cochran to make her name more sophisticated.
Her time for traveling around the world was beaten in only a few months.
She retired from journalism to marry a millionaire 42 years her senior (1894).
She tried running his companies after his death, but went bankrupt and had to return to reporting (1905).
When the Pittsburgh Dispatch assigned her the tradition women's topics of fashion and society, she took the initiative to travel to Mexico and serve as a foreign correspondent.
She smuggled out a suitcase of notes about government corruption by telling Mexican border agents that the case contained ladies' 'unmentionables.'
She faked insanity to be admitted to the asylum on Blackwell Island; her reports of neglect and brutality forced needed reforms.
While running her late husband's companies she patented a steel barrel that was the model for 55-gallon drums that are still in use.
