    He said he was 'much better' at basketball ('Baseball was work'), but only got to play one season of it professionally.
    He was so ticked off about being traded to the Cardinals, he severed all contact with the Pirates until the 30-year reunion of the 1960 World Series championship team.
    At Duke, he was a two-time All-American in both baseball and basketball.
    As a fielder, he led the National League in double plays a record five seasons.
    Phillies Manager Gene Mauch said, 'He holds the Pirates together.'
    Similarly, a Giants player said about Groat's impact on the Cardinals, 'They were a bunch of individuals until he came along. Defensively, they were loose. Now they're the best.'
