Hockey Player
    (September 4, 1919-April 14, 2012)
    Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Defenceman for the Montreal Canadiens (1941-56)
    Team captain (1948-56)
Played on four Stanley Cup winning teams
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame (1966)
    #3 retired by the Canadiens
President of the Montreal Royals Triple-A baseball club
He was nicknamed 'Butch' because his last name sounds like butcher.
He did not begin skating until he was sixteen.
He biked the 50 miles to his first training camp so he could pocket the travel expenses alotted by the Canadiens.
His one-sided fight against Terry Reardon of the Bruins prompted the NHL to add breaking up fights to the duties of referees.
The Canadiens did not retire his number until 2009, after the Quebec National Assembly passed a motion favoring it.
During high school, he started a beekeeping business that became so profitable he was able to buy his parents a home.
He stood six inches taller than the average hockey player of the day and practiced weight training when it was rare in the NHL, prompting Dickie Moore to say, 'He appeared to have been chiseled out of stone.'
His physical play reinvigorated the struggling Canadiens and helped keep the franchise from leaving Montreal.
He was considered a clean player who rarely participated in hockey fights; more frequently, he would be the one breaking up fights by separating the combatants.
When organized crime tried to muscle in on the restaurant he opened after leaving the NHL, he invited the head of the local Mafia to dinner and told him, 'Over my dead body. I will never hire one of your men.'
