    Appeared on Broadway in 'Daddy Long Legs' (1914), 'Come Out of the Kitchen' (1916), 'Mary Rose' (1920), 'The Changelings' (1923) and 'Leave Her to Heaven' (1940)
    She left school at 14 to become a chorus girl in a stock company.
    She was married three times, divorced twice, with her second marriage, to actor George Brent, lasting just over two years.
    She turned down the title role in 'Stella Dallas' (1937), which earned an Oscar nomination for Barbara Stanwyck.
    She was twice nominated for the Oscar as Best Actress.
    Warner Brothers lured her away from Paramount to give their studio more 'class.'
    She had a successful writing career after retiring from acting.
    She was an early aviatrix, who flew cross-country solo several times and was friends with Amelia Earhart.
