U.S. Congressman
    (April 17, 1961- )
    Born in San Diego, California
    Gregory Richard Gianforte
    Republican
    Software engineer and businessman
Co-founder, with his wife, of RightNow Technologies Inc.
Won a special election to fill Congressman Ryan Zinke's House seat, representing Montana's at-large district (May 25, 2017); Endorsed by Donald Trump, Mike Pence, and Donald Trump, Jr.
Cited for a misdemeanor assault after allegedly 'bodyslamming' a reporter for the Guardian, Ben Jacobs; an encounter later corroborated by audio (May 24, 2017)
Controversy resulted in widespread calls for him to step down from his candidacy and/or apologize to Jacobs
He won his Congressional seat despite facing a criminal charge.
The Missoulian criticized him for appearing to agree with a supporter who identified 'the news media' as 'our biggest enemy.'
He was accused of flip-flopping on the issue of repealing the Affordable Care Act (which was apparently the source of his argument with Jacobs).
His campaign was initially defiant during the fallout over the assault allegation, downplaying the incident and refusing to issue an apology.
Only after audio surfaced corroborating eyewitness accounts, detailing his 'bodyslamming' Roberts, and breaking his glasses in two while yelling 'I'm sick and tired of this!' did the campaign take the allegations seriously.
The nationwide scandal resulted in several state legislators rescinding their endorsements, although Donald Trump and his son publicly stood by him; the former calling him 'my friend' and 'a wonderful guy.'
Ironically, he avoided the Trumps like the plague during the 2016 election when he was running for Governor, steering clear of Trump's one rally in Montana citing 'a scheduling conflict.' He went on to lose to the incumbent.
He promotes the teaching of creationism in schools, donating $1.5 million to the Glendive Dinosaur & Fossil Museum, which is a bastion of anti-Evolutionary beliefs (like T-Rexes being passengers on Noah's Ark).
He was named Pacific Northwest Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young (2003).
He graduated from the Stevens Institute of Technology (1983)
He later received an honorary doctorate from the Stevens Institute, where he delivered the University commencement (2012).
He went prairie dog hunting with Donald Trump Jr., who appeared at several campaign events on his behalf.
He apologized for his actions during his Victory speech (the attendees cheered enthusiastically, with one supporter yelling out 'we forgive you!').
Some found it suspicious that - in an age of cell phone cameras and live streaming - that not one reporter recounting the incident got even a snippet of actual footage (all that is available is audio, which reeks of the Lewandowski-Fields dustup a year earlier).
Some also raised the question as to why Ben Jacobs only tweeted a photo of his broken glasses. Surely if Gianforte had 'thrown a punch' to break the glasses Jacobs would have sustained a broken nose or a black eye (but police deemed his injuries not severe enough to warrant a charge of felony assault?)
