He got his start at folk clubs in New York City.
Despite being in the music industry for over 30 years, he is best known for his #1 hit song 'American Pie.'
He tried breaking away from the style of 'American Pie' which lead to a plummet in sales of his later albums.
'American Pie' has been covered by many pop singers, like Madonna.
He dedicated 'American Pie' to Buddy Holly, ignoring two other talented musicians who died in the infamous plane crash, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper.
He is often ditched by record labels when his efforts fail.
Why he might not be annoying
'Killing Me Softly With His Song' was written by Lori Lieberman based on her experiences at one of his concerts.
He managed to gain a #1 hit with 'American Pie' despite its length, at over eight minutes.
His song 'Vincent' is a tribute to the painter, Vincent Van Gogh.
He writes and records most of his own music.
He supports environmental causes.
