    She dropped out of psychology studies at Fisk University to take up dance.
    She divorced danseur Miguel Godreau after only two years.
    She took her first ballet lesson at six.
    The legendary Agnes DeMille discovered her.
    With her regal look and supple body, she acted as Alvin Ailey's muse, with him creating some of his most famous works focusing on her talents.
    One of her most acclaimed performances was 1971's fifteen minute epic solo 'Cry.'
    In 2001, she was presented with the National Medal of Arts.
