It was originally called 'Florizel Street' until producers at Granada Television complained that it sounded like a disinfectant.
After the first episode, the 'Daily Mirror' declared, 'The programme is doomed from the outset.... For there is little reality in this new serial, which apparently, we have to suffer twice a week.'
It recycled the same archetypes for its characters, such as Elsie Tanner and Bet Lynch as the 'tart with a heart.'
The chairman of the Broadcasting Standards Council criticized the show's low representation of ethnic minorities (1992).
In a survey by the Manchester Evening News, Bet Lynch's beehive was named worst haircut in soap history (2007).
It popularized Northern English dialect on TV.
In its 80s prime, it regularly attracted 20+ million viewers.
The episode in which villain Alan Bradley was killed by a tram (1989) remained on the list of ten largest British TV audiences as of the end of 2009.
It won three BAFTA Awards for best continuing series (2003-05).
It was described by the Times of London as 'the most confident and accomplished soap opera television has ever seen.' (1993)
