    Also appeared in the films ‘Brewster’s Millions’ (1921), ‘Changing Husbands’ (1924), ‘The Road to Yesterday’ (1925), ‘The Volga Boatman’ (1926), ‘The King of Kings’ (1927), ‘Two Arabian Knights’ (1927), ‘Skyscraper’ (1928), ‘Lady of the Pavements’ (1929), ‘The Painted Desert’ (1931), ‘Lucky Devils’ (1933), and ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’ (1952)

Why he might be annoying:

    He dropped out of school when he was thirteen.
    He was married five times, divorced four times.
    RKO cancelled his contract after a newspaper mistakenly ran his picture to accompany the story of the arrest of a different actor, also named William Boyd (1931).
    He either licensed or endorsed over 2,500 products.
    Cecil B. DeMille offered him the lead in the 1956 version of ‘The Ten Commandments,’ but he declined as he felt that he was too strongly identified with Hopalong Cassidy to make a believable Moses.
    In his later years, he refused requests for interviews and public appearances because he wanted people to remember him as a movie and TV idol.

Why he might not be annoying:

    His only son died at age nine months.
    In ‘The Volga Boatman,’ when his character declared his love to Elinor Fair’s character, he was actually proposing to Fair. She accepted, both in the movie and in real life.
    Studio executive <31650>Joseph Schenck<31650> said he had the finest voice in motion pictures.
    He mortgaged almost everything he owned to purchase the rights to the Hopalong Cassidy character and the film library (1948).
    His gamble paid off when NBC began showing the films, kicking off the craze for TV westerns (1949).
    At the peak of the show’s popularity, he received 15,000 fan letters a week.
    The inner sleeve of the ‘American Pie’ album featured a poem about him written by Don McLean.
