He blames his womanizing on the fact that his mom was a burlesque dancer: 'I saw more naked breasts before the age of four than most men see in their lifetime.'
He was in a gang and drinking heavily as a teen, until he was given a choice of join the Navy or go to jail. (He went with the Navy.)
He was convicted of cocaine possession with intent to distribute (1982) and spent six months in jail.

He says if he likes the script, he would do an independent film for the price of a plane ticket.
He made seven films with John Cassavetes and (through 2009) three with Wes Anderson.
He was nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar for 'Faces.'
He noted, 'I'm a much nicer person now that I'm sober and I don't lie to people anymore.' (1992)
